IIW 2007B Recap
Friday, January 4th 2008
Well, it's been an entire month since IIW 2007B so I guess it's time I finally got around to posting my report. This report certainly won't be as detailed as last time: this conference felt more like a series of announcements than the working session that IIW 2007 was. Here the things significant enough that I still remember them a month later:
- The name badges were much nicer than last time - hard plastic instead of paper printouts - but they actually cost less.
- OAuth 1.0 has gone gold. Interesting as a technique but I think that most of the use cases would be better-served by an authentication protocol with delegation built in.
- OpenID 2.0 is finally done.
- The more I learn about the guys from JanRain, the more impressed I am. I have no idea what their business model is, or if they'll be (or are) profitable, but they seem to be the developers most firmly committed to doing things the Right Way™.
- VRM seemed to be the hot topic this IIW, but despite the abundance of respect (hero-worship?) I've got for Doc Searls, I just can't see the attention economy he talks ever happening. Chalk it up to the cynicism I've developed from talking to Semantic Web guys.
- All the meals and hotel stuff went much more smoothly this time... excepting of course the missed flight due to a computer glitch and the unhelpful Delta staffers at San Jose airport. Luckily everything worked out in the end.
All things considered it was a great experience - my compliments to everyone involved in organizing and presenting the conference!
