The Move
Well, we made it. Our little family is now a family of Seattlites... no longer... Provonians? Provoese? Anyway, we're here, and I thought I'd blog about our experience.
First of all, having somebody handle all the mess surrounding relocation is great. It's been really nice to just have people show up with paperwork, and then they (cart stuff off | pack stuff up | take our car) without needing to find them, or pay them, or anything. Of course, we've been wide open to a phishing attack through all this... if someone had come up and said "Hey, I'm from [relocation company name elided] and I'm here to take your computer I would have signed on the line and never seen my beloved iMac again.
Day 1 was packing: everything went great. Day 2: loading was not so wonderful. I came down with some kind of terrible head cold/flu, and basically became too weak to walk, or even stand, for several hours. Basically just lost my voice and collapsed on the floor. My superhero wife managed to supervise the loaders, and the various relatives who came to help clean up our apartment afterwards, while I was comatose on our front room floor.
The flight out was fine, much better than I expected for Sean's first time. When the plane started moving, he yelled "No, let me out, let me out! It's TOO DANGEROUS" over and over, be he soon became accustomed to the movement and eventually decided it was fun to ride an airplane. Our rental car in Seattle here was a bit mixed up on arrival but eventually we walked away with a bright blue PT Cruiser (which is unfortunately due today, two days before our car arrives).
My first impressions of Seattle:
- Nobody here understands air conditioning. I mean, yes, you don't technically need it much here, but seriously, what's with the no A/C?
- Seattle people think that wine is the best thing ever. They get really excited if it's ever mentioned.
- Everything internal to Amazon is less exotic and more complicated than you'd expect :)
Here's a selection of our moving photos on Flickr.
